Purpose of a music video
History of music videos
1960's
Promotional short films reached new heights in the 1960's for bands such as the rolling stones & the beatles it was an easier way for them to show there new content to fans without having having to go on tour. one of the earliest performance clips in 60's pop music was a promo video made by The animals for their first hit "hit of the rising sun." the high quality clip which was in colour was filmed in in a studio on a specially built set, it featured the group lip-synced performing depicted through an edited sequence of many tracking shots, long shots and close ups.
1970's
the 1970's was the birth of music television in 1974 precisely,Australia started airing shows such as countdown and sounds which made the music video incredibly popular and also highlighted the importance of promoting of promoting bands and established acts.
1980's
since the early 80's was when the symbiotic relationship of music and video has becomes that most of us had taken for granted - bands cut albums, studios lay ou money for big budget videos to go with one ore two better songs they have written then sometimes they get to see them on the television- only if when they received awards at the end of the year on the music channels that barely acknowledged the videos existence before so honoring. the 1980's saw the launch of the biggest music channel in the world which is mtv.
1990's
In December 1992,MTV began listing directors with the artist and song credits, reflecting the fact that music videos become an eutuers medium. directors such as Michael gondray, spike jonze, Mark romanek and hype William's all got their start around this time they all brought a unique vision and style to there videos that they directed
Music videos are made for promotional use to promote the artist and get there name out there and get them more exposed it gives them a chance to express a visual perspective of the song for example if the song was about a person travelling to the shop they would be ale to portray this in a music video therefore giving the audience a visual representation of the song, also it give the song more exposure to the audience it makes the song easy to hear by anybody in the world via television. it's all image and cross-platform marketing for the purposes of exposure and expansion of the artist's profile. it is a great way to promote an album aswell making 3 or 4 videos for 3 or 4 tracks off an album.music videos have now become so important to an artists career record labels that sign artists now have to set aside a new budget for the video to there music.
The extension of the income is to keep the in the public eye for as long as possible it becomes a for the artist to promote his album by keep playing his music video on television months after the song has come out for example Michael thriller album had been for a year before the thriller music video came out but after Michael released the video the album went straight back to the the top of the charts.
Another example of this is the soulja boy song crank dat was just a song on youtube until it was noticed by a record company form there the video was made and it showed the dance that goes with the song the video This song was #1 in BET: Notarized Top 100 Videos of 2008 countdown also The video ranked at #1 on BET's Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2007 countdown so without the video maybe he wouldnt of been so succeseful this was prooven by his following single kiss me through the phone which did not have half the succes his first song had.
also another extension of income is to help recoup some of the production costs of recording the initially music they make money from the music stations.
extension outlets
the extension of outlets allows further promotion by playing the video on many different outlets for example there are many different Television stations as well as MTV such as VH1, kerrang, kiss, the box and many more, there also a lot of other mediums in which we can see music videos such as the Internet there are Internet sites such as YouTube, vod pod, metacafe and much more these are all another form video outlets, the last outlet for for music videos our music video downloads you are enable to download videos straight to your mobile,IPOD or MP4 players. The advancement in technology has made it possible for music videos to be viewed anywhere in the world for example you can now watch them on the bus, in the garden, on the toilet where ever you can think of, however the biggest medium in which music video are shown is TV as there is now many different tv stations which are specific in music video so there are more opportunity's to see music videos that are being constantly played 24/7, this enable the biggest artist in the world to be in the spotlight constantly. another factor about television is the use of interactive red button viewing which most tv channels offer now where you are able to view any video you want to see for example virgin media have a service called music on demand where they have a massive database of music videos where you can choose at your leisure.
Synergy
Some artists will work together with films and TV programs to give them more exposure time on air. for example T-Pain ft flo rida low is the sound track for the film step up and during the video it has flashes of the movie this is again extra advertisment for the artist, film for the music video itself. most other links with tv are things to stuff with the x factor strictly cime dancing and shows like that it can really boost an artist image in a positive way as so many people watch thoose types of shows its a great way to promote the artist.
MTV (music television)
MTV is the pioneers for the music video they first lauched the channel way back in AUGUST 1ST 1981 since then it has been the main place to view all the latest pop promo's. it has been split up in too about 5 different sub channels these days these channels are MTV 2 MTV dance MTV base MTV +1 and MTV hits these channels specialize in certain types of music for example MTV base is all about urban music MTV dance is all about dance and techno music and etc, these channels

Ananlyse of two contempary music videos
Michael Jackson Billie jean (Jan 2nd 1983) analyse
This video was directed by Steve barron the producer's of this video was Simon Fields and Paul Flattery it it was given a budget of $100,000 and was filmed in january 1983 and was first aired on MTV in 2nd march 1983 in was shot in A studio on North Cahuenga Blvd, in Hollywood, CA (USA) the production companies that are responsible for this video are called LIMELIGHT Productions and GOWERS FIELD FLATTERY gowers field flattery is owned by the producers of the video.
mes-en-scene
the mes-en-scene used in this video is of the detective crime scene type, the location is set in a dark run down neighbourhood in which has many props you would expect to see in this sort of area, the props include of cameras, bins, street lamps, rubbish, phone boxes etc, the most iconic prop used in the video was the lighting of the street slabs also the lighting of piece of scenery for example when he leans against the street lamp, the costumes used in the video fit in with the theme such as long drench coat hat and black glasses for the detective, smooth looking suit for Michael police outfits for the police the detective/paparazzi wearing the long trench coat to hide his identity etc, this was a completely different look to what everybody had expected of him such as the jehri curls and the leather suit different from his usual Afro a disco styled clothing.
Cinematography
There is a very wide variety of shots used in this music videos such as medium close ups, medium close ups, wide shots, and a wide shot used on a jib arm. The close ups of Michael are usual only used in the introduction of the song and only showing his feet this shot is not used as much as the medium close ups which are used to show Michael performing the song, the wide shot of Michael is used a lot to show off his dancing the wide shot on the jib arm is also used a lot to show off the set. The lighting in the video is also dark and mysterious set in night scape therefore the set lighting is dark there are a few shots where the lighting is really bright for example when Michael goes to step into the bed it lights up this happens at 4 Min's 8"
special effects
There are not many special effects in this video in terms of effects it is actually quite basic, the only effects there are is in the introduction when the video starts off in black and white this is the only different visual effect the video has, the only other effects are the shots what are in small boxes which is the opening shot, also when Michael is dancing he there are some freeze frames and split screens of Michael spinning or dancing. The other effect is the lighting of everything Michael touches for example every time he steps on a pavement stone it lights this begins at the beginning of the video at 0:25" when the piano drops in and the colour goes from black and white too normal, and a burnt out "Hotel" sign illuminates as he passes this happens at 3Min's 56" could be called a prop and a visual effect, however due to the date this music video was released special effects as we know them these days were far more basic back then so special effect were far more inferior to the standard they are now. The pace of the video is good because it is in time with the b
beat for example the freeze frames are all in sync with the music if a beta comes the visual on screen will flash up in time.
relation to song
The relation of the music and the video is very similar and ties in together well the song is about somebody starting a rumour about him being the father of somebody’s baby but it is not him and then everybody is after him to try and get the truth this portrayed well in the video where the detective is trying to find Michael some of the lyrics are also linked to the video for example when Michael says “eyes were like mine there is then a freeze frame of his eyes this happens at 2 min 29" at also in the first chorus the detective drops the paper it has Billie jean this happens at 1min 2" as the headline and it is in sync with the song.
Intertextuality
The only signs of intertextuality that is used in this video is the theme of the video such as detective movie with dark lighting and mysterious characters. The genre of music is pop/R’n’B because it doest’t really follow the contemporary look of most videos in this genre. there is clearly a few borrowed ideas from the crime scene, detective genre of films because of the sort of chase in the video, also The video is based on all three aspects performance, narrative and concept the performance is when Michael is singing and dancing into the camera on the street slabs, the narrative in the video is when the detective is trying to chase him down and find him and the concept part is the parts where he has things like the homeless man,the random tiger etc.
The artist is portrayed well in this video because he has a lot of time on screen which gives him a lot of exposure time and gets the point across of who the artist is what his about by showing him dancing and singing. the track is also promoted very well because the video has much relation with the song it doesn't distract the viewer from the song like many videos have done in the past, the artist is also portrayed as a smooth character who is innocent.
The target audience for this video is for adults from the age of 22 to 40 because the video is very grown up and not as simple as maybe a normal pop video or teen video would be like and appeals more to an older audience because of the age of the song. many people loved Michael Jackson and always had positive responses to this video comments on YouTube are always positive comments people said things such as

Jay-Z Ft Alicia keys Empire state of mind (October 1, 2009)
Director: Hype Williams
MES-EN-SCENE
There is a lot good and interesting Mes-en-scene here the main thing is the many different locations jay-z has used around the city of new York, such as the empire state building, times square where most of Alicia keys shots are filmed, Yankee stadium, Harlem and many more, they also use a lot of photography of scenery in new York as mes-en-scene for example in the intro and through out the song. The costumes/clothing used are contemporary any normal hip-hop video such as the bling, the hats hoodies etc. the video doesn’t really include many props the only props I would say are included is maybe his big necklaces and the piano.
cinematography
There is good use of cinematography there are many interesting shots such as birds eye view shots of the city which create a visual aspect of what jay-z is rapping about in the song, but mainly there are shots of just medium close ups of jay-z and Alicia keys in where you see them performing the song either together or separately the other interesting is one of them standing on the steps together it seems to have the camera on the jib arm allowing them to get a variety of shots above and below them. the light is of a nightscape type
Special effects
The visual effects for this music video are quite simple such as there are no real complicated effects, the only real effects are the flashing images in the introduction and through out the song which flash in time with the beat in the intro and when the song starts they flash in time with the piano, also most of the song is shot in black and white until jay-z stops rapping and Alicia keys finishes the remading of the song where it is in color other then this there are no real effects.
Realtion to lyrics
The song and the video relate well with each other because the lyrics are all about different parts of New York and every location in the video is New York, for example when he talks about when says about state street a picture of state street sign flashes on the screen this happens at 0 mins 27 seconds of the song, another example is when he says about the 9/11 terrorist attacks the 9/11 memorable flashes on screen this happens at 2min 5 seconds of the song another example is when he talks about the New York Yankees the Yankee stadium flashes on screen at 1 min 26 seconds and etc. another example of this is where the chorus encludes the lyrics about big lights will inspire you the video is mostly shot at night when all of the city is light up. In this video there is no real intertextuality here that I couldn’t real recognize anything from any other style of music or any genre of T.V or film.
In this video there are quite a few typical characteristics I would recognize form any other hip-hop video for example the women, the clothing such as flat peak caps, bling, baggy clothes, the car (Mercedes may back) these kinds of things are things I would expect to see in a normal hip-hop video.
This video is predominantly performance and concept based because there is no real narrative through out the song, it is mostly performance based because there are a lot of shot of Jay-Z and Alicia rapping or singing into the camera and there is also a lot of images which are based on the concept of the song, I think the song promotes the artist well because he has a lot of time on screen and shows him off a lot plus with the clothing he wears says a lot about him, also it portrays him as some who is proud to be from New York.
I think his intended target audience teenagers and young adults such as 20 to 30 year olds because it is hip-hop/R’N’B and this is the kind of music that most people in this generation are in to so I think his music appeals more to a younger generation.

1.it's Jay-Z and Alicia Keys in a very popular song. No reason it has to be low budget.
2. Could still be a better video. Even with a low budget.
3. The video's not terrible. Just ok though. Especially for such a big song

Belly (1998)
Directing film debut from the highly acclaimed music video producer hype williams comes belly, with an all star hip hop cast. If your a fan of boyz in the hood or menace to society then i strongly suggest you watch this film, the acting is very good from all sides, and delivers on all accounts.

this is a dvd to watch, pay attention!
In general people always seem to have a positive response to his work by having positive comments about the videos he has made on youtube. The intended audience is the hip-hop/ R’N’B audience
his work is very much targeted towards a younger audience most of the projects he has worked on are usual R'N'B or hip-hop based which this type of music suits more of a younger generation for example his film Belly he directed was all based on hip-hop culture.

Hype Williams is the king of music videos. He was the first person to revolutionize music videos in the late 90's, early 00's and many of the things he has done have become used in everything from movies to commercials. I would love to see him direct a big budget hollywood movie because I know he has the potential to sit next to Cameron, Jackson and the like cause I sense he has a high movie I.Q. like they do. Man if only Hollywood give him the opportunity.
this is a response found on IMDB.com clearly from the comments above it will portray hype as a very skilled and obviously well known director who is very experianced in music videos being involved in them for so long also commercials and he has even directed his own film he is popular and this response shows that people would like to see him direct a higer budget hollywood film.

In most of his music videos ive noticed that his trade mark is to use the letter box picture ratio on screen, he's used this in videos such as Kanye west gold digger, Jay-z empire state of mind, notorius B.I.G big poppa and many more.
he has worked on so many different projects there is a record of this on his offcial website http://www.hypewilliams.com/bio.html he has directed musicvideos for starz such as TLC, Jay-z, LL cool j, biggie smalls, R.kelly and many more, he is one of the most established and most respected directors in this field of the media, and it is more like clients are more honoured to have had a music video directed by him then him being honoured to make there music video because has such a positive reputation.
