1960's

Promotional short films reached new heights in the 1960's for bands such as the rolling stones & the beatles it was an easier way for them to show there new content to fans without having having to go on tour. one of the earliest performance clips in 60's pop music was a promo video made by The animals for their first hit "hit of the rising sun." the high quality clip which was in colour was filmed in in a studio on a specially built set, it featured the group lip-synced performing depicted through an edited sequence of many tracking shots, long shots and close ups.



1970's

the 1970's was the birth of music television in 1974 precisely,Australia started airing shows such as countdown and sounds which made the music video incredibly popular and also highlighted the importance of promoting of promoting bands and established acts.



1980's

since the early 80's was when the symbiotic relationship of music and video has becomes that most of us had taken for granted - bands cut albums, studios lay ou money for big budget videos to go with one ore two better songs they have written then sometimes they get to see them on the television- only if when they received awards at the end of the year on the music channels that barely acknowledged the videos existence before so honoring. the 1980's saw the launch of the biggest music channel in the world which is mtv.



1990's

In December 1992,MTV began listing directors with the artist and song credits, reflecting the fact that music videos become an eutuers medium. directors such as Michael gondray, spike jonze, Mark romanek and hype William's all got their start around this time they all brought a unique vision and style to there videos that they directed



Music videos are made for promotional use to promote the artist and get there name out there and get them more exposed it gives them a chance to express a visual perspective of the song for example if the song was about a person travelling to the shop they would be ale to portray this in a music video therefore giving the audience a visual representation of the song, also it give the song more exposure to the audience it makes the song easy to hear by anybody in the world via television. it's all image and cross-platform marketing for the purposes of exposure and expansion of the artist's profile. it is a great way to promote an album aswell making 3 or 4 videos for 3 or 4 tracks off an album.music videos have now become so important to an artists career record labels that sign artists now have to set aside a new budget for the video to there music.

The extension of the income is to keep the in the public eye for as long as possible it becomes a for the artist to promote his album by keep playing his music video on television months after the song has come out for example Michael thriller album had been for a year before the thriller music video came out but after Michael released the video the album went straight back to the the top of the charts.



Another example of this is the soulja boy song crank dat was just a song on youtube until it was noticed by a record company form there the video was made and it showed the dance that goes with the song the video This song was #1 in BET: Notarized Top 100 Videos of 2008 countdown also The video ranked at #1 on BET's Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2007 countdown so without the video maybe he wouldnt of been so succeseful this was prooven by his following single kiss me through the phone which did not have half the succes his first song had.



also another extension of income is to help recoup some of the production costs of recording the initially music they make money from the music stations.
